Welcome to Our Family Blog

Sit down, relax, and take in the day-to-day musings of our little suburban family.

"Families are like fudge - mostly sweet with a few nuts." ~Author Unknown

"Family: A social unit where the father is concerned with parking space, the children with outer space, and the mother with closet space." Evan Esar

A Day in the Life

HAHA. Just as I suspected. No pics, no collage, nada today. I had forgotten that I tried to keep to a schedule of blogging at least once a week on Sunday nights when everything was quiet. Did I really think I was going to get anything done last night?

The following is a fairly accurate account of our normal goings-on in our household on a daily basis. Mind you, I do actually cook when I have the energy and motivation to do so. Not so, last night. Got home, put on my comfy sweats, lounged a bit. My sister and aunt dropped off Colin a little later and I made a run for an easy drive-thru dinner. Rob has been craving fried chicken for days, so I visited my old friend, the Colonel despite my own longing for some gooey cheese enchiladas with rice and beans. Oh, well. Once Rob got home, we had dinner and Colin watched a little Curious George. Then time for him to do the bedtime routine: floss, brush, mouthwash, bedtime story (which he is pretty much reading all on his own now!), and lights out. All said and done, I was out of his room by 9pm.

I've been really impressed with Colin, lately. I don't know what it is, but now that we're well into the trimester, he's gotten so good at his routines. He used to be such a pain (pardon me, Dearest, I do still love you, little one, but you really can be a pain sometimes!) when we asked him to brush his teeth and get ready for bed, but now he whines just a little and is off to find his flossers. And he loves to read before bedtime. Part of his homework each night is to read for at least 15 minutes, which we document in his "Reading Log". He does this with ease and will often read for almost a half hour. If it's a particularly long book, we'll alternate reading pages outloud or read part of it and save the rest for the next night. Hearing his voice when he reads just makes me melt. ♥ And this seemingly cheerful reaction to his daily routines does not stop with evening activities. The boy actually smiles in the morning and showers, gets dressed in his uniform, eats breakfast (unheard of!!!), and brushes his teeth with a smile on his face! What the?!?! Where is my child? Who is this angel? Oh, but he's mine--all mine! :) Though I do have George Lucas and John Williams to thank for the help in the morning.....

You see, our little love is pretty much addicted to Star Wars. As many little boys his age are. And, I suppose, a lot of big boys many, many, MANY years his senior are, as well. So we have employed a little assistance in the getting-up-in-the-morning process. We play the Star Wars soundtrack to rouse him from blissful sleep.Yes, it starts off pretty low......then the lights go on....then a "Colin? Colin.......wake up....." and we turn the volume up a tad. Slowly, the eyes open, the sleepy head pops up, and the tiniest smile emerges from his dry, chapped little mouth. Before you know it, he's dressed and ready to go. God Bless Star Wars. :)

Anyway, I guess I'm just rambling. Thinking out loud. It feels good, actually--you know, to write these sorts of everyday things down. It helps me to appreciate things more. All those little things I gloss over and don't think much of while they're actually happening.

Well, I think I'm going to attempt to go back to my original idea of posting (or at least writing) on Sundays. It's just a couple of days away, now. We've got a busy day tomorrow with a wedding to attend, so I'm sure there will be plenty to talk about. Ciao for now......
